We are honored to have Patsy Melhorn (Mrs. Patsy) working with our Homework Club kids. She has brought such joy to each child in the learning process. We are blessed to have her!
At Mrs. Patsy's math station, the children are learning basic math facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each child tracks their progress on a bracelet. As they prove their mastery of each of function, they earn a bead. Once they have learned all the facts of a particular operation, they get to take the bracelet home. Several students have already earned their first bracelet and are working on the next one. They are so excited about collecting the beads! Each skill they learn makes them better and quicker with their facts. This increased speed helps them to complete their math homework in less time.
A boy named Christopher, exemplifies the impact her program is having. He is so very proud of his math accomplishments. Christopher ran into Homework Club recently announcing to everyone "Where's Ms. Patsy -- I'm doing my 5's today!!! I'm doing my 5's. I'm ready!!!!!"
Thank You, Patsy, for your time and support!
I asked Mrs. Patsy what working in Homework Club has meant to her, and this is what she had to say:
It is a blessing for me to work with the children at the Homework Club as well as support the volunteers. As a retired teacher, with 37 years experience, mostly focusing on math, my experience can help the students as well as the volunteers with math questions. The rewards are many with the children. If you have a desire to work with elementary age students to help strengthen their academic skills, this is a great place for that, and there is support for you if you have questions concerning their math homework.
Please consider joining us in this program to help neighborhood children improve their education.
