Volunteer Spotlight: Kathy McAlister

Kathy McAlister works with kids in our Homework Club to help them improve their reading skills. As a retired teacher, she brings all her expertise to the task of helping these young readers learn to read and discover the joy found in the pages of a book. With a focus on reading fundamentals, the kids in her program thrive!

First-grader Brandon never wanted to take a turn reading aloud in his small group. He would look at Kathy, shake his head and say,"I don't want to read!" She knew it was because he lacked confidence and some basic sight word knowledge. After working with him individually, she can see that he is gaining the skills he needs and improving each week. Soon Brandon will rejoin his group ready to read!

Kathy loves her work with these children. She told us "Working with the kids in the reading club is a very rewarding experience. Helping the struggling readers and watching them grow and improve is just an awesome feeling!. An even better feeling is knowing that I have made a difference. Anyone looking for a volunteer opportunity should try it. You'll love it!"
