I want to get real with you... we thought long and hard about participating in North Texas Giving Day this year. After the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Harvey, I wondered if it made sense. How can the rest of the Feed Lake Highlands team and I move forward as if it is business as usual? After much conversation and prayer, we realized that the aftermath of Harvey, much like that of Katrina, is just beginning and we must rise to meet the challenge.
After Katrina we learned that many people who came to Dallas for temporary refuge stayed here and made it their home. We expect the same pattern to repeat itself with Harvey. These folks have lost everything and will need our support. In anticipation of their arrival in Lake Highlands, we plan to expand our services in the following ways.
How We Are Preparing
- Add a dedicated food distribution location at Audelia Manor
- Add additional days of food distribution as demand requires at the New Room Community Center
- Connect with Thurgood Marshall and Skyview elementary schools. We want to be sure that any children in need of educational support will get the opportunity to enroll in our Homework Club.
Increase Available Funds
Your gift of financial support will help us greet these individuals and families with the level of hospitality and love for which Lake Highlands is famous! North Texas Giving Day is a great way to have your gift go even further. Not only do we have donors who have committed matching funds to us totaling $11,000, but every donation made on North Texas Giving Day is also eligible for matching funds from the Communities Foundation of Texas. PLUS every dollar donated increases our odds of receiving bonus funds and/or prizes! You can schedule your gift through September 14th so don't delay!
Expanding Our Volunteer Base
Volunteering with Feed Lake Highlands can take many forms, including sitting with children and and helping with homework, tutoring in math and reading, collecting and organizing food for distribution days or giving administrative support. If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know! We will be hosting a volunteer information session on September 23rd from 9 am to noon at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church. We'd love to see you there.
Thank you so much for your ongoing support. We can only do this work because of the generosity of people like you.
